Visit to the Cornell Club

posted 10th July 2009

Mr R Downing visited the Cornell Club

The Cornell Club is a 14 storey-building situated in Midtown Manhattan. Common facilities occupy the first seven floors and the guest rooms those above. These rooms are comfortable and have space. The Club was chosen for a 5-day stay in New York because of its central location, the security offered and the prospect of freedom from late night revellers during the conference season.

It is a relaxing venue having a country house ambience. Good food is served. The buffet breakfast, included in the room rate, is taken in the Cayuga Room - an elegant dining room. Dinner is a pleasing experience and the food is of gourmet standard. On Wednesday, lobster is the main course and, on Thursday, a wide choice of steaks is offered. On Friday a visit to the Red Tap and Grill was made. This area comprises the Club Bar and a dining area for light meals but it is not up to the standard of the Running Horse.

The dining room is closed at week-ends and one can either use the Red Tap and Grill or eat out. For Saturday, a table was reserved at the nearby Oceana restaurant using the Club's concierge service. On Friday, after a short walk to Central Station, a table was obtained at the less expensive Michael Jordan's Steak House - good food in unusual surroundings and a worthwhile experience.

My wife and I were able to visit many places within walking distance (even Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and made use of the red tourist buses that travel every 10 minutes on the Upper and Lower Loops - a better way of seeing New York if one is on the upper deck. We sallied forth daily from our haven doing as much as we were able to and enjoyed a very pleasant stay.
