VE Day 80th Anniversary Dinner
Monday 12th May 2025
On Thursday 8th May, we had the profound honour of commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day with a truly memorable evening at the Club. Our very special guest speaker was none other than Club Member, Flight Lieutenant Colin Bell DFC BEM AE, former Mosquito pilot and distinguished veteran of the Second World War. The evening began in style with a champagne reception, offering members and guests the opportunity to gather and reflect on the significance of the occasion. This was followed by a delicious three-course dinner, complemented by a selection of fine wines and Port.
The highlight of the evening was Flt Lt Colin Bell’s captivating and deeply moving address. Born in Surrey in 1921, Colin joined the Royal Air Force in 1940 and trained in the USA before being commissioned and retained by the American Army Air Corps as an instructor. Upon his return to the UK, he joined 608 Squadron (Pathfinder Group), flying Mosquito bombers from Downham Market, Norfolk.
He completed 50 bombing operations over Germany, including 13 over Berlin, surviving intense combat with remarkable courage, humility, and wit—qualities that remain with him to this day. Now 104 years old and recently awarded the British Empire Medal in 2024, Colin’s presence and words were nothing short of inspiring. We are immensely grateful to him for sharing his experiences and reminding us of the sacrifice and resilience of his generation.
