Pamela Burke joined the WRAF in January 1940 straight from Gerrards Cross Convent School as an ACW and after a brief initial training managed to get her choice of posting to the ops room at Biggin Hill despite still being only 17 years old.

She was mainly involved with 92 Squadron with the likes of Geoffrey Welham, Tommy Lund and Brian Kingcome. She soon established herself as calm under pressure and was offered a commission, but as this meant leaving Biggin Hill, she initially turned it down but eventually agreed to accept with only six months at RAF North Weald and Uxbridge before returning as a section officer to RAF Biggin Hill as an Ops B, remaining there until the end of the war, then moving to RAF Merryfield overseeing flights of returning POW’s from Japan.

She married Group Captain Basil Primavesi in 1947 and was a very dedicated RAF wife during his postings which included C/O of 50 Squadron at RAF Waddington, Station Commander at RAF Cranwell, the Queens flight and Air Attaché in Tehran towards the end of the Shah’s reign.

She has remained a member of the RAF Club, although sadly has not made the journey up to London from Studland Dorset for a few years now.

Below are a few photographs from her time at the WRAF.
