Friday 28th January 2022

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Air Vice-Marshal The Honourable David Murray, CVO OBE DL, was appointed as the new Chairman of the Club on Wednesday 26th January, succeeding Air Marshal Dame Sue Gray.

David’s RAF career spanned 33 years, during which time he commanded RAF Halton as well as Winchester Garrison. His operational tours included serving in the Falkland Islands, UN peace-keeping duties in Bosnia and latterly in Sierra Leone. He also served extensively throughout Africa and in Australia, Cyprus and Germany. In his last tour he was appointed in the dual role of Defence Services Secretary, responsible for the relationship between the RAF, Army and Royal Navy and HM The Queen and as Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Personnel) responsible amongst things for UK government liaison with military charities and veterans’ organisations, including bringing the Armed Forces Covenant into law in 2011.

Following his retirement from the RAF in 2013, he became the Chief Executive of SSAFA for four years before then becoming CEO of the RAF Benevolent Fund for a further four years. David is currently a board member of the Veterans Advisory Board providing advice, challenge and diversity of thought to the government on veterans’ issues and in February 2021 he was named a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Suffolk. He is also a Gentleman Usher to Her Majesty The Queen and currently lives in Suffolk with his wife Moira.

From the Chairman:
“Since first joining the RAF Club some 42 years ago, I have come to regard it as a welcoming safe haven in London where I will always find kindred spirits. It is the closest thing that I have experienced to an Officers’ Mess outside of the Service and it reflects much of the RAF ethos, esprit-de-corps and standards of excellence. Consequently, it is an institution that I really believe in and cherish and I want to contribute to ensuring its long-term sustainability and growth for its members”.
