Running Horse Re-opened 🐎

Thursday 11th September 2025

We are delighted to announce that the refurbishment of our beloved Running Horse Tavern is now complete.

After a three-month closure, our doors are open once again, and we are proud to share the refreshed Running Horse with our Members. Many of the features that gave the Tavern its unique charm have been carefully preserved, while a timeless new design has been introduced to enhance its character.

Following an extensive refurbishment of both the Tavern and kitchen areas, the modernised Running Horse now offers a fresh, clean look with 25% more capacity,  both seated and standing, along with step-free access and an odour-free environment. Members can relax and enjoy a pint or two alongside a new menu that still features much-loved classics such as Fish & Chips, the Club Sandwich, and the Club Burger.

A key objective of the project was to modernise the facilities while retaining the character and features of the original Tavern. During the early stages of renovation, we uncovered a unique piece of the Club’s history: graffiti left behind during a 1970s refurbishment. The inscription reads: “A.F. Shaw / Carpenter, Ex RAF Rear Gunner 10 Sqn, worked here April 1972”. This has been preserved as a historical feature and built into a wall. We also uncovered an original arch, previously hidden during the last renovation, which now proudly features in the new Tavern.

The Arts & Heritage Committee played a central role in the planning process, carefully selecting artwork for the space. The collection now combines newly commissioned pieces with several treasured originals, ensuring the Tavern reflects both tradition and modernisation.

With thoughtful planning and investment, the Running Horse has been fully transformed into a lasting and integral part of the Club’s future, ready to serve Members for many years to come.

Official Opening

On Tuesday 9th September, the Running Horse Tavern was officially opened by the Club President, Air Marshal Sir David Walker KCVO OBE. Sir David unveiled the plaque, which now proudly hangs in the Running Horse. He was joined by the Club Chair, Air Vice-Marshal Warren James CB CBE DL, and together they congratulated the Club’s Chief Executive, Miles Pooley, along with the Club team and contractors, on the successful completion of this extensive project.

Others present on the day were Club Trustees, members of the House & Arts Committee, as well as a small number of staff and lead contractors involved in the refurbishment.

The following day, Wednesday 10th September, the doors of the Running Horse Tavern opened to Members for the first time at noon. The first official guests were Members Chris and Sally Walton. Both Members since 2019, they were very complimentary about the newly refurbished space and said they look forward to many happy returns.
